Budget 2025: AIF income to be classified as capital gains, not business income

The Union Budget 2025-26 has clarified that income earned by Category I and Category II alternative investment funds (AIFs) from sale of securities will be compulsorily treated as capital gains, and not business income. This will put these funds on par with foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) and help reduce litigation.
