Peak Sustainability Ventures to invest in Arvind’s Rs.12-Cr “torrefaction” plant
Climate investment firm Peak Sustainability Ventures has partnered with Ahmedabad-based, publicly listed textiles maker Arvind Ltd to establish a large-scale cotton stalk torrefaction plant in Botad district, Gujarat. The plant is designed to have a capacity exceeding 40,000 tonnes annually.Torrefaction is a thermal process that enhances the energy density, stability and handling properties of biomass and increases the calorific value by up to 20 per cent. The resulting biomass closely mimics coal and can be seamlessly used in industrial boilers, with up to a 100 per cent replacement of coal, without additional capital investment or significant retrofit.Peak Sustainability Ventures will be responsible for the reactor design, identifying the technology partner, and funding the project's capital expenditure costing INR 12 crore. The project aims to accelerate Arvind Ltd's transition towards becoming a 100 percent coal-free company by 2030. The plant will utilize cotton stalks to produce energy-dense biomass, which can replace coal in Arvind’s manufacturing unit boilers, contributing to the company's thermal energy needs.
