Edfintech startup Skillsvest raises Rs.5.5 Cr led by Plug and Play Ventures

San Francisco, CA (USA)-based Skillsvest , a fintech platform, has raised INR 5.5 crore in a pre-seed funding round, which included a mix of equity and debt. The investment round was led by Plug and Play Ventures, with participation from angel investors, including Sascha Mornell. The company has also received backing from UC Berkeley SkyDeck and Launch Accelerator by Jason Calacanis.Founded by Sreemaan Thiruppathiraja and Deborah Schermann, Skillsvest is a fintech platform focused on education financing. It offers a "pay only if you earn" model for students pursuing international master's programmes, enabling funding without collateral or co-signers, with repayments linked to income and triggered after a defined threshold. The company plans to use the new funds to scale student financing, strengthen regulatory readiness, and expand partnerships.The startup currently supports Indian students pursuing higher education in markets such as the UK, US, and Europe, covering both tuition and living expenses. Skillsvest has deployed over INR 1.2 crore and has accumulated a waitlist of more than 3,000 students. It has also established partnerships with over 4,500 college counsellors across India for its distribution efforts. Skillsvest aims to support 50-100 students and build a broader ecosystem around career outcomes over the next 12-18 months.
