Aluminium player Hindalco submits sole bid for Bharat Small Reactors

Aditya Birla Group’s aluminium and copper manufacturer Hindalco has emerged as the sole entity to submit a proposal to the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) for the development of its 220 MW Bharat Small Reactors. While Tata Power, Reliance Industries, Jindal Steel, JSW Energy, and Adani Power initially showed interest, they did not proceed with a formal submission.Bharat Small Reactors are 220 MW pressurised heavy water reactors designed to serve as captive power plants for industries with substantial clean electricity requirements. These reactors are being optimised to occupy less land, allowing for deployment near industrial facilities such as aluminium, steel, and metal plants to assist in decarbonisation efforts.The partner company is entitled to the electricity generated by the plant while paying NPCIL an expertise fee linked to power production.
